Clear Words, Stronger Connections: Using Plain Language to Build Trust and Impact

Clear Words, Stronger Connections: Using Plain Language to Build Trust and Impact

Tuesday, December 9, 2025 (10:00 AM - 11:00 AM) (EST)

Description

Nonprofits exist to serve communities, but too often the words we use create barriers instead of bridges. In this interactive workshop, you’ll learn how shifting from jargon-heavy “nonprofit speak” to plain, clear language strengthens trust with the people you serve, helps your message resonate across a variety of perspectives, and ensures that materials are accessible to everyone. We’ll explore evidence-based benefits of plain language, review real-world examples, and practice transforming your own communications. Walk away with tools to make your writing more effective, inclusive, and mission driven.

** This program is ideal for individuals who interact directly with the public through both in-person and written communication.

Workshop Goals:

  • Examine evidence for why plain language matters. (State and federal plain language directives, readability, accessibility, etc.)
  • Identify common barriers to understanding, such as industry jargon and academic phrasing that may alienate or confuse your audience.
  • Practice rewriting real examples from your organization’s materials to make them more conversational, welcoming, and impactful.
